I call Tulum "the beach resort of the ancient Maya." Actually, it was a ceremonial site, but the beach makes for great swimming beneath the Castillo.
Walk north on the road which goes past the Tulum site for 10 minutes and come to Don Armando's Cabanas. These simple, sandy-floored rooms come with hammocks but no air conditioning. Basic, but fun and on a beach from your dreams.
Near Puerto Morelos, just south of
Cancun, this lancha awaits fishermen or divers. Puerto Morelos also has
the best lobster in the world--bar none!
